Pinnawala oil anointing ceremony: About 100 elephants to participate

The traditional oil anointing ceremony at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage will be held on a grand scale on April 15, said Sabaragamuwa Chief Minister Mahipala Herath.

He said that about 100 elephants in the orphanage would take part in this event.

The Chief Minister Herath was addressing a recent press conference.

He added that a special avurudu table would be arranged for all the elephants in the orphanage during this New Year.

The National Zoological Gardens Department and Sri Lanka and Tourism Board have sponsored this event with the Economic Development Ministry.

The Chief Minister also said that three New Year festivals have been organized on a grand scale in three locations in Kegalle district by the Mahipala Herath Jana Sahana Foundation.

The first of these New Year festivals will be held at the Kegalle Urban Council rounds on April 14.

The second festival will be held in Rambukkana Bathabure grounds on April 15 and the third will be held on Warakapola Urban Council grounds on April 22. The festivals will include traditional New Year contests, such as, Beauty Queen contests, male and female bicycle races, marathon races, climbing the grease pole, costume contests etc. The winners will receive valuable prizes and money.

The festivals will be colourful with traditional dance, singing and cultural items. An elephant race will also be held on the New Year festival on April 15 in Rambukkana. This festival is open even for local and foreign tourists.
