CMC vaccinates 1500 hotel employees

By Dilanthi Jayamanne

The Public Health Department (PHD) of the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) said it had been able to vaccinate approximately 1,500 hotel and eating house employees against typhoid from last week.

PHD chief Dr. Pradeep Kariyawasam said yesterday that six doctors from the MOH areas under his purview visited eateries depending on the number of staff members. Those with small staff were required to call over at the PHD for their vaccination.

The PHD commenced vaccination last week. Dr. Kariyawasam warned that there was an increase in the number of typhoid and para-typhoid cases in the city as they had received several complaints from patrons of hotels and eating houses within the past few months.

The PHD Chief said that many of the cases were reported from the Wellawatta area.

Typhoid and para–typhoid are both contagious. It could also be contacted from food and water through unhygienic food preparation, he added.
