Haldummulla farming land sold to foreigner for golf course

The government has sold a land extent in of 628 acres in Haputale to a foreign national to build a golf course, UNP MP Harin Fernando said.

He told The Island that Soraguane at Haldummulla, in Haputale, had been disposed for a song to an Indonesian businessman and the transaction was clouded in secrecy.

Seven thousand members of the farming community would be displaced as a result of the golf course project, Fernando alleged adding that the fauna and flora would also be affected thereby further compounding the human-elephant conflict.

The people of the area would be deprived of the Weliya Oya Stream, which was developed by the Irrigation Department at a cost of Rs. 850 million, he said.

Asked if the famers had been compensated, Fernando said that only six million rupees had been allocated and there was not much they could do with such a small amount.

He said that the Rajapaksa government, having passed unethical legislation to aquire private property, was in the process of disturbing the environment as well.
