Government officials in Kilinochchi and Mullaithivu have taken initiatives to provide families with cooked food and dry rations until they can resume their day to day lives.
Nearly 500 families were reported to have been affected due to rains and floods in Mullaithivu. Mullaithivu District Secretariat has received Rs. 499,000 for assistance to the affected people. Officials said that the families were with their relatives. Most families live in temporary shelters provided by non-governmental organisations.
Majority of the families were from Thunukkai (392 families) while others were reported from Manthai East (49 families) and Maruthanpatru (58 families).
The Disaster Management Unit attached to the Mullaithivu District Secretariat said most of the temporary shelters were in bad conditions, as they were designed for the warm weather, not for rains and floods.
The unit said the figures could be higher as there were reports of more families affected in Oddusuddan division.
In the meantime, more than 850 families were reportedly affected by floods in Kilinochchi. They too are being provided with food and dry rations by the government since last week.
Kandawalai division was the worst affected area with 879 families driven out of their homes. The families have been assisted by government and non-governmental organisations since last Friday (25).
Despite the floods receding, the residents are unable to re-commence their day to day lives due to bad conditions of the houses and the environment. Kilinochchi District Secretariat officials said the people were not in a position to get back to their normal life styles despite moving back to their homes but no reports of damages to crops and farmlands in the Kandawalai division received.
