The Ceylon Electricity Board has spent Rs. 119.8 million to repair the severe damages caused to the electricity supply lines and transformers by the recent cyclone that devastated several areas in the country. In that disaster, 5 transformers, 4 high tension power line pylons, 46 kilometers of high tension wire, and over 1,000 kilometers of low tension wire had been totally destroyed.
Out of the 660,000 families living in the Southern Province, the electricity supply of 530,000 families was completely cut off. The supply system has now been fully restored. The Southern Province CEB depot had informed that all electricity units in the province were working normally.
Although the electricity supply to the towns, suburbs and rural areas had been connected, the board, admits that there could be a few houses in the rural areas without electricity. If there were any houses without electricity, the CEB requests them to inform it through emergency Call System Tel. Numbers 071-4260117, 071-4269119 and 091-2248292.
For the last one and a half weeks, the CEB has deployed, in addition to the team of electricity engineers in the Southern Province, 1,000 officers under the direction of teams of engineers from Colombo and elsewhere, and 151 Civil Service units to restore the Southern Province Electricity Supply.
