A van transporting cattle illegally along the Kandy-Mahiyangana road had been arrested by the Ududumbara police at Hunnasgiriya in the early hours of yesterday, police said.
The police on receiving a tip off had put a road block at Hunnasgiriya. The speeding vehicle did not follow the orders to stop. The police chased after the vehicle and found it abandoned along the road few miles away from the road block.
The vehicle had been taken into custody around 4.45 a.m. and there were ten animals crammed inside.
Information on the illegal racket which had been operating for a long time had been uncovered and three police teams have been assigned to arrest the suspects involved, police said.
