Dew slams State sector services

Human Resources Minister Dew Gunasekera told Parliament yesterday that the general public had lost faith in State sector services and the need of the hour was to overhaul it completely.

Participating in the committee stage debate on the budget 2012, the senior minister said that the public sector has no longer been able to provide the services to the satisfaction of people. "There is huge displeasure and frustration among the masses at the sorry situation the public sector institutions have come down to. The State sector machinery has been confronted with a massive problem of inefficiency and incompetence paving way for waste and corruption. The entire State sector is rotten to the core owing to lethargy and inability to provide the services people expect from them.

The public sector must be reformed and restructured to make them institutions servicing the people, the minister said adding that managing the human resources is imperative in the face of global changes. If we fail in this regard it is inevitable that we would be relegated in the global economy. The challenges of the global economy cannot be faced with a lethargic and incompetent work force, the minister said adding that the Finance Ministry must take serious note of this situation.
