ධීවරයන් විසි දෙනකුට ආසන්න සංඛ්‍යාවක්‌ මරණයට පත් කරමින් දකුණු පළාතට පසුගියදා බලපෑ සුළි කුණාටුව පිළිබඳව නාරා ආයතනය පැය විසිහතරකට පෙර අදාළ අංශවලට දැනුම් දුන් බව ධීවර ඇමැති රාජිත සේනාරත්න මහතා ඊයේ (19 දා) පාර්ලිමේන්තුවේදී ප්‍රකාශ කළේය.

මෙම කරුණ තමන් මෙතෙක්‌ කලක්‌ ප්‍රසිද්ධ නොකළ බව කී රාජිත සේනාරත්න මහතා මෙම සුළි කුණාටුව ඇතිවීමට පැය 24 කට පෙර ඒ පිළිබඳ කාලගුණ විද්‍යා දෙපාර්තමේන්තුව, ආපදා කළමනාකරණ මධ්‍යස්‌ථානය, වෙරළ ආරක්‌ෂක බළකායට සහ නාවික හමුදාවට නාරා ආයතනය විසින් දැනුම් දී තිබූ බව ද පැවැසුවේය.

ශ්‍රී ලංකාවේ දකුණු වෙරළ තීරයට මෙම සුළි කුණාටුව හමන බව අදාළ වේලාවද සමගින් නාරා ආයතනයේ සභාපති ආචාර්ය හිරාන් ජයවර්ධන මහතා කෙටි පණිවුඩ ඔස්‌සේ වෙරළ ආරක්‌ෂක හමුදාවට සහ නාවික හමුදාවට දැනුම් දී ඇතැයිද ඇමැතිවරයා කීය.

ඒ පිළිබඳව කාලගුණ විද්‍යා දෙපාර්තමේන්තුවට දැනුම් දෙන ලෙසටද සභාපතිවරයා නාරා මධ්‍යස්‌ථානයට උපදෙස්‌ දී තිබෙන බව කී ඇමැති රාජිත සේනාරත්න මහතා කාලගුණ විද්‍යා දෙපාර්තමේන්තුවේ ස්‌ථාවරය වූයේ එවැනි එකක්‌ නොවන බව යෑයි ද එය ප්‍රසිද්ධියේ කියා තිබූ බව ද කීවේය.

ඉදිරියේදී මෙවන් තත්ත්වයක්‌ ඇතිනොවීමට කටයුතු කරන බව ද ජාත්‍යන්තර වශයෙන් නියම කාලගුණ තත්ත්වය චන්ද්‍රිකා තාක්‌ෂණය ඔස්‌සේ සෑම ධීවර යාත්‍රාවකටම දැනුම් දීමට කටයුතු කරන බව ද ධීවර ඇමැතිවරයා ප්‍රකාශ කළේය. දකුණේ සුළි කුණාටුවෙන් මියගිය අයගේ පවුල් වෙත රුපියල් ලක්‍ෂය බැගින් වන්දි මුදලක්‌ ගෙවීම කෙරෙහි අවධානය යොමු කරන බව ද ඒ සඳහා චීන තානාපතිනියගේ උපකාරය ඉල්ලා සිටි බව ද ඇමැති රාජිත සේනාරත්න මහතා කීවේය. එම වන්දි මුදල් ජනවාරි මාසයේ සිට ගෙවීමට කටයුතු කරන බව ද හානිවූ යාත්‍රා සඳහා රක්‌ෂණ වන්දි ගෙවීමට ශ්‍රී ලංකා රක්‌ෂණ සංස්‌ථාව සමඟ සාකච්ඡා කළ බව ද කීය.

පත්කළ මන්ත්‍රී (ප්‍ර. ජා. ස) අනුර කුමාර දිසානායක මහතා ඇසූ පැනයකට පිළිතුරු දෙමින් ඇමැතිවරයා එසේ කීය.

Met. Dept. negligence caused 20 deaths among Southern fishing community

In spite of receiving a warning from the National Aquatic Resources Research Development Agency (NARA) about 24 hours before recent gale force winds, which claimed the lives of 20 fishermen, the Meteorology Department hadn’t alerted those vulnerable fishing communities, parliament was told yesterday.


Fisheries Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne alleged that the Meteorology Department had ignored the warning, thereby it was responsible for the deaths among the fishing community. The minister emphasized that the tragedy could have been averted had the Meteorology Department acted on the timely warning received from the agency.

An irate Fisheries Minister claimed that the Disaster Management Centre, Sri Lanka Coast Guard and the Sri Lanka Navy, too, had been warned of the impending disaster, though none of the responsible officers took any notice of the warning.

He was responding to a query from DNA parliamentary group leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake.

Chairman of the NARA Dr Hiran Jayawardena had sent SMS messages alerting the Sri Lanka Navy and the Sri Lanka Coast Guard of the impending disaster and the time it was expected to hit the Southern Coastal belt areas, the Minister said.

The Meteorology Department had dismissed the NARA warning citing latest forecast available to the Department, the minister said.

The Kalutara District MP said that from now on NARA would flash such warnings, in line with international maritime guidelines, directly to fishing vessels using satellite technology.
