Arrangements have been made to provide life jackets to fishermen. It will be made compulsory for fishermen to wear life jackets after the first quarter of 2012, said Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Minister Dr. Rajitha Senaratne.

"The Fisheries Ministry is also planning to introduce equipment which would help fishermen to locate stocks of fish in the deep sea.

It will help decrease expenses incurred on fuel, engine oil and ice. Use of such equipment will reduce the time fishermen have to spend in the sea in detecting fish resources," he added.

The Vessel Monitoring System (VMS) is also to be made compulsory in every multi-day fishing vessels after introducing the VMS method.

According to Minister Senaratne, these measures will help protect the freshness of fish resources and increase the catch.

"It will also help to increase fish consumption in Sri Lanka and thereby reducing malnutrition," he said.
