A pilot project to promote the manufacture and distribution of carbonic fertilizer is to be launched shortly as a joint programme of the Ministries of Agriculture and Agrarian Services and Wildlife, centred round Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa and Hambantota districts. The idea is to encourage farmers to use carbonic fertilizer in place of the large scale use of urea fertilizer.

The Agrarian Services and Wildlife Conservation Minister S M Chandrasena told Daily News that the project is aimed to encourage the farmers to use carbonic fertilizer in place of urea fertilizer subsidy.

“We have planned to offer a package of facilities and incentives to encourage farmers contribute to the manufacture of carbonic fertilizer and using it on a large scale basis for their cultivations. We also hope to give incentives to various government and non-governmental organizations engaged in the production of carbonic and compost fertilizer to expand their output. In addition, it is intended to start carbonic fertilizer manufacturing units at Grama Niladari Division level under a uniform methodology” Chandrasena emphasized.

The minister said that this programme was of national importance which was aimed at increasing the productivity conservation of the environment and reducing the huge expenditure being incurred for perchasing the fertilizer subsidy. The Anuradhapura district's assistant secretary of the fertilizer secretariat said that as a pre-requisite to the intensified carbonic fertilizer promoting programme a workshop was held at the Anuradhapura Agrarian Services Auditorium on the 26th with the National Fertilizer Secretariat's Director Ranjan Dharmawardane chairing it. The Divisional Secretaries, staff grade Agriculture and Agrarian Services officials including the Provincial Agriculture Secretary, Agrarian Services Assistant Commissioners, etc., who participated were briefed about the proposed carbonic fertilizer sector programme and their respective role in the project implementation.
