Saving energy with Switch Asia

Tourist hotels rank as one of the most energy intensive areas in the commercial and industrial sectors in the island with a corresponding high energy cost. Similarly, the use of water and other natural resources as well as the generation of waste is also very high in this industry.
It has been observed that the hotel sector accounts for 4 to 5 per cent of the national power demand and of the total cost of operations in this particular industry, 18 per cent goes to meet the power bills. Also, it is significant to note that of this power cost, air conditioning equipment accounts for 50 per cent of the total power bill.

In this scenario, the Greening Sri Lanka Hotels, a European Commission funded project under the Switch Asia programme has moved in to enhance the environmental performance of hotels through improvement of energy, waste and water management systems and reduce cost of operations and increase the market acceptance of Lankan hotels through promoting them as low carbon footprint green hotels.

Their attempts are beginning to show results as a group of journalists were made aware of the benefits one such hotel has achieved, especially in the energy sector. One could immediately see that the whole project made sense, for, the monthly energy saving alone for the Goldi Sands Hotel in Negombo is between Rs. 150,000 to Rs. 200,000.
