Ban on illegal fishing sees increase in Jaffna fish cultivation

The banning of illegal fishing equipment and vessels by the Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Ministry has seen an increase in small fish cultivation in the Jaffna district and other parts of the country, Fisheries and Aquatic Resources Development Minister Dr.Rajitha Senaratne said.

Minister Senaratne was addressing the inauguration ceremony of the Jaffna District Fishery Association at Weerasingham hall, Jaffna.

Jaffna has 19,744 fisher families while it has 84,963 fisheries communities. Jaffna District Fisheries Association has 8,241 fishermen as members. The Fisheries Ministry has spent Rs 8.6 million to distribute fishing nets among 156 fishermen while loans were also distributed among fishermen under the “Diyawara Diriya” loan scheme, introduced by the Fisheries Ministry along with the Bank of Ceylon.
