Motor accidents cause 2,000 deaths a year

By Maheesha Mudugamuwa

Around 2,000 people die each year in motor accidents, according to statistics available with the National Council for Road Safety (NCRS). Road mishaps have become the number one killer of people in the 15 to 29 age group. Over 50 percent of the accidents occur in urban areas.

Officials said that road accidents mostly happened as a result of careless driving, not adhering to the road safety regulations, lack of pedestrian foot walks, long hours of driving, lack of sleep and carelessness of pedestrians.

Nearly 150 accidents occur daily causing at least five to six deaths.

The past three decades (from 1977 to 2007) recorded 1,120,848 accidents, 40,000 deaths and 68,440 serious injuries in Sri Lanka. The number of road accidents average around 6,000 per year. It is also predicted that road accidents globally will cause the deaths of 1.9 million people annually by 2020.
