Over 11,680 dengue cases, 82 deaths reported by July 13

A total of 11,687 dengue cases and 82 deaths had been reported from all parts of the country by July 13, Health Ministry sources said.

According to sources, the highest number of dengue cases, 4,506 and 1 deaths, had been reported from the Colombo district.

The Colombo Municipal Council area recorded 1,804 Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever (DHF) cases and 12 deaths. Gampaha district recorded a total of 1,497 dengue cases and 12 deaths. Kalutara district recorded a total of 673 dengues cases and five deaths.

During the past 13 days 1,478 dengue cases and five deaths had been reported throughout the country. Last month a total of 3,412 dengue cases and 14 deaths were reported countrywide. The number of dengue deaths have drastically decreased due to advancement of treatment and training provided for local specialist doctors by special medical team from Thailand.

The Health Ministry requests the public to seek immediate medical treatment from a State hospital of a qualified and experienced doctor if they have fever. Special care should be given to children with fever. Bed rest is a must even after the fever goes down because Dengue can recur after a few days as Dengue Shock Syndrome or as Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever which can be fatal if not treated properly on time, the sources added.
