The National Zoological Gardens Department has arranged for veterinary surgeons to further their knowledge of elephants and administration.
Director of the Dehiwela Zoo Bashwara Senanka Gunaratne revealed that a workshop was conducted from June 27 to July 2, by Dr. Harold Stomar of the Vienna Zoological Gardens in Australia, for veterinarians and administrators on how to maintain the enclosures of the animals and the procedure to follow in administration.
Another workshop was held from July 11 to 15 for 65 veterinarians from every district organised by the DNZG, Peradeniya Veterinary Surgeons Association and the Health Department, on how to treat elephants and also training vets on various other aspects.
Gunaratne said that assistance was provided by the American Ambassador Patricia Butenis and the Sri Lanka Foundation Insitute.
He said that the Dehiwala Zoo and Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage were two very popular places visited by both, foreign and local tourists and that the annual income generated from them assists the national economy to a great extent.
Gunaratne said that the DNZG is under the Ministry of Economic Development which is determined to bring the Dehiwala Zoo and Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage up to international standards and attract more tourists.
He said that several steps have been taken to develop the Dehiwala Zoo and the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage and through foreign veterinary surgeons to improve the knowledge of the Sri Lankan veterinarians and train local mahouts further.
