Dengue update: 07th July

Public knowledge on dengue still low

Public knowledge on dengue fever is still not at a satisfactory level.
Persons who suffer from any type of fever for more than one or two days, must seek medical treatment at a state hospital. Although the fever goes down on taking Paracetamol, it can return in another few days with dengue shock syndrome, a Health Ministry spokesman said.

According to the spokesman persons with any type of fever should avoid aspirin and food and drinks red and brown in colour.

This is a must to diagnose the disease accurately. Seeking immediate medical treatment from a state hospital or from a qualified and experienced doctor is a must to prevent complications.

But unfortunately many persons still go back to their normal lives just after the fever goes away and parents let their children play and study soon thereafter," he said.
"There are four dengue viruses. If a person gets affected by more than one virus his or her immunity against dengue worsens. This is not so when it comes to some diseases such as chickenpox.

Many patients do not show dengue fever symptoms such as high fever, headache, pain under eyes, pain in muscle and joints, vomiting, loss of appetite, pain in the stomach, red patches under skin (during Dengue Hemorrhagic Fever) and bleeding from the nose or gums.
The symptoms of dengue shock syndrome are paleness, cold hands and legs, palpitation and low pressure.

The patient dies when the liver or heart fails, due to bleeding and convulsions.
All patients who have fever must avoid aspirin, take paracetamol and plenty of rest, the spokesman said.
