A baby elephant found starving in the jungle was brought to the Giritale Wildlife Training Centre for treatment. Officials said that the calf had either roamed away from the herd or was orphaned after the mother met with an accidental death. They said the calf would be handed over to Udawalawa Elephant Transit Home after attention.

A wild elephant with gun shot injuries lying in a tank in the days Hennanigala Veddah village for about two has escaped the notice of the authorities. Locals said that the jumbo lying with its head under water had been starving. They said at least 15 gun shot injuries were visible on the part of the body which was above the water. Meanwhile officials of the Hennanigala Range Forest Office who visited the scene said a veterinary surgeon of the Wildlife Conservation Department would arrive to attend to the jumbo.
