Dengue Update: 5th July (3 news items)

National dengue eradication policy on the drawing board

By Don Asoka Wijewardena

On the instructions of Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena, a National Dengue Strategic Planning Committee will draw up a National Dengue Eradication Policy. Under the proposed policy, 11 Ministries will be responsible for dengue eradication, the Health Ministry said.

A spokesman for the Ministry told The Island that the necessity for introducing a National Dengue Eradication Policy had emerged as its spread was unprecedented country-wide. The Eradication teams, which inspected several places during recent visits, found public response to eradicate dengue mosquito had been negative.

He pointed out that many house owners had complained to the Ministry that their house premises were not inspected. It was an unfair complaint because the Health Ministry did not have enough human resources such as PHIs and entomologists to inspect each and every house in the country.

The spokesman added that in future the Health Ministry, in coordination with 11 Ministries, would launch Dengue Eradication Programmes at Divisional Secretary and Grama Niladari levels. In addition all Provincial Councils and local authorities would be responsible for active dengue control projects.

He said that the Health Ministry had already received comments, suggestions and new ideas from the 11 Ministries and 75 per cent of the work had been completed.

Colombo tops dengue cases, deaths

Colombo district recorded the highest number of dengue cases - 3,745 and the highest number of deaths – 27 during the first half of this year.
Gampaha district recorded 1,263 cases and 11 deaths while over 10,000 dengue cases were reported from all parts of the country by July 1.

Meanwhile, the Health Ministry is in the process of collecting data from ministries and institutions to strengthen the National Strategic Plan on Mosquito Eradication, a ministry spokesman said.

The main objective of this is strengthening coordination between other ministries, the spokesman said.

According to the spokesman, the Health Ministry was earlier the only institution that held the sole responsibility of controlling mosquitoes.

”After setting up the Presidential Task Force on Controlling Dengue, the responsibility was distributed among other ministries and state institutions. Other ministries and state institutions such as Provincial Councils, Municipal Councils etc carry out mosquito control activities,” the spokesman said.

“The ministry is expanding its data base under the direction of Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena and gathering information on the Education Ministry, Environment Ministry, Disaster Management Ministry, Defence Ministry, Provincial Councils, District Secretariats, Divisional Secretariats etc. Bette coordination between state institutions can be expected once the data base is upgraded,” he said.
