With a possible power crisis looming, if rains fail, the Power and Energy Ministry has planned to provide free CFL bulbs, starting with places of religious worship, to cut down electricity bills and consumption.
On the recommendation of three-member committee, appointed by Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka, Lanka Electricity Company (LECO) Chairman Chandana Haputhantri had taken measures to produce CFL bulbs in large quantities and at the same time provide them at a concessionary rate to the needy consumers.
Ranawaka says, in addition to the 25 per cent rebate on electricity bills to all religious establishments in the country, granted by his ministry, CFL bulbs will be another concession which the ministry has granted.
The Ministry of Power and Energy on Thursday launched a programme to provide CFL bulbs to all religious establishments in the country with the aim of conserving energy.
The programme was inaugurated by Minister Ranawaka at the ‘Atamasthana’.
A stock of CFL energy saving bulbs were handed over to Dr. Pallegama Siriniwasa Thero and other chief incumbents of the Atamasthana.
