Reopening Somawathiya & Flood Plain National Parks

By Amadoru Amarajeewa
The Wild Life Conservation Department said the opening of the two parks Somawathiya and Flood Plain National Park located in the eastern province to tourists will take place shortly.
The Somawathiya National Park is located between Polonnaruwa and Trincomalee towns while the Flood Plain National Park is located in the Mahaweli Junction, Manampitiya.
These parks were declared as national parks in the 80s but due to the war situation it was not possible to have them open for visitors, stated Sisira Kumara de Silva, Assistant Director, Wild Life Conservation Department.
He said that surveying and placing of demarcation signs were now being carried out in the Somawathiya National Park.
At present there are 6 National Parks under the Mahaweli Zones of the Wild Life Conservation Department.
The Pigeon Island in Trincomalee among them, declared in year 2000 as a national park could not be used during the war but was opened last month.
There are 17 National Parks in the island which are open to the public.
