The construction of the Pinnawala Zoological Gardens, adjoining the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage, will be expedited following a request from Chief Minister of Sabaragamuwa Province Mahipala Herath.
Forty five acres of the Zoological garden near to the Elephant orphanage will be allocated for endemic and endangered animal species in order to prevent them from facing further threats.
Director General of the National Zoological Garden Bashwara Senaka Gunarathna said that the construction of the internal road network and other infrastructure facilities will be completed by the end of this year.
The first stage of the Pinnawala Zoological Gardens is planned to be open in 2012.
The government’s intention is to develop the area as tourist zone with opening of the zoo, said Kanaka Herath.
