by Zacki Jabbar

An ambitious plan to construct five star hotels, exhibition and shopping complexes, with foreign direct investment in Katana, has been given Cabinet approval.

Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella, addressing the weekly Cabinet press briefing in Colombo, said that the ‘Tourism Hub’, which was to be located on 80 acres of State land in close proximity to the Katunayake Airport, would comprise four five star hotels with a total of 2,300 rooms, two shopping malls and an exhibition and convention centre.

The project, which was still at a feasibility stage, Rambukwella said was expected to attract US$ 1.5 billion in foreign direct investment for phase one and creation of a minimum of 10,000 jobs.

Asian Resorts and Consortium will be conducting the feasibility study for the project, which has been approved by the Cabinet of minsters on a proposal by Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa, he said.
