Dengue victims need timely medical attention

By Don Asoka Wijewardena

The Health Ministry’s National Dengue Control Unit advises the general public to be aware of the dengue onslaught and its symptoms because most people are not aware of the need to seek timely medical attention. Some victims rush to hospitals at the last moment and doctors find it difficult to treat such cases, the Health Ministry said.

A doctor in the National Dengue Control Unit told The Island that it was extremely important to be aware of the nature of dengue and its symptoms. Many people who developed fever were in the habit of getting native medical treatment and analgesic (pain killers) to control fever. But when they were in the stage of developing dengue hemorrhagic fever, they rush to hospitals.

He pointed out that dengue virus was transmitted to a person by dengue mosquito. The virus would enter the blood stream. An this stage, a person might develop a set of symptoms such as high fever, headache, pain under the eye, muscular and joint pain, red scars on the skin, vomiting and loss of appetite. When a person was in a state of dengue shock, the victim would develop paleness of the body, rapid heart beat, hypertension, dysfunction of the liver, feeling faint and heart failure. The person might die unless proper treatment was given.

The doctor said that to get timely medical attention victims who develop high fever for more than two days should see a qualified doctor. The person should also rest and take correct dosage of paracetamol and must refrain from drinking alcohol. They should not consume red and brown colour food items and beverages.
