PHIs call for action against manufacturers

Secretary of the Sri Lanka Public Health Inspectors Union L.P. Rohana yesterday told The Island that two brands of margarine and several brands of biscuits containing a chemical called E 319 harmful to infants and children were being sold in the market.
He said the consumption of foods which contained that substance would affect children’s livers and nerves.
Rohana said that the manufacturers of those food items had contravened the law and released them to the market without labels warning the public.
He said already on an order obtained from the Kahatagasdigiliya Magistrate, the Public Health Inspectors had inspected a locally manufactured brand of margarine.
A special gazette notification issued on Sept. 12th says that E 319 and four others seasoning materials are injurious to the health of infants and children.

දරුවන්ට හානිකර රසකාරක අඩංගු මාජරින් හා බිස්‌කට්‌ වෙළෙඳපොළේ

ළදරුවන්ට හා ළමයින්ට හානිකර ඊ 319 නමැති රසකාරකය අඩංගු මාජරින් වර්ග දෙකක්‌ හා බිස්‌කට්‌ වර්ග කීපයක්‌ දේශීය වෙළෙඳපොළේ අලෙවි කෙරෙන බව අනාවරණය වී ඇතැයි ශ්‍රී ලංකා මහජන සෞඛ්‍ය පරීක්‍ෂකවරුන්ගේ සංගමයේ ලේකම් එල්. පී. රෝහණ මහතා "දිවයින" ට පැවසීය.
අදාළ රස කාරකය ළදරුවන්ට හා ළමුන්ට ස්‌නායු ආබාධ හා පිත්තාශය ආශ්‍රිත රෝග ඇතිවීමට හේතු වන බැවින් එම රසකාරකය ඔවුනට හානිකර බවට සඳහන් ලේබලයක්‌ එම ආහාර වර්ගවල සඳහන් කළ යුතු බව නියම කර තිබේ. නමුත් එම නියමය උල්ලංඝනය කරමින් ඉහත කී මාජරින් වර්ග එවැනි ලේබලයක්‌ රහිතව වෙළෙඳපොළට නිකුත් කර ඇතැයි රෝහණ මහතා සඳහන් කළේය.
දැනටමත් කහටගස්‌දිගිලිය මහෙස්‌ත්‍රාත් අධිකරණය මගින් ලබාදුන් නියෝගයක්‌ මත දේශීය වශයෙන් නිපදවන එවැනි ලේබලයක්‌ රහිත මාජරින් වර්ගයක්‌ පිළිබඳව මහජන සෞඛ්‍ය පරීක්‍ෂකවරුන් විසින් දිවයින පුරා පිහිටි වෙළෙඳසල්වල පරීක්‍ෂාවට ලක්‌කරන බව ද හෙතෙම කීය. 2009 සැප්තැම්බර් 15 වැනිදා නිකුත් කරන ලද 1617 අංක 16 දරන අති විශේෂ ගැසට්‌ නිවේදනය යටතේ මෙම ඊ 319 රස කාරකය ඇතුළු රසකාරක වර්ග 4 ක්‌ ළදරුවන්ට හා ළමුන්ට හානිකර බව දක්‌වා ඇතැයිද ඔහු වැඩිදුරටත් පැවැසීය.
