The latest accusation of graft, unfair play and crass greed of the workers at Pinnawla Elephant Orphanage comes from no less a person than a famous Hollywood actor temporarily here to play a role in the film Common Man by Chandran Ratnam, also starring Sir Ben Kingsley. The news item in a daily paper was titled: Mr Cross gets cross. It sounds rather facetious but Ben Cross was very unpleasantly surprised at the treatment he received at Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage which is the treatment meted out to most foreigners. He says he paid Rs 2,000 for entry and then just a couple of yards ahead a man charges him Rs 500 for his camera. Rs 300 was demanded to feed an elephant a banana. According to his angry comments "every mahout wanted money."
