Govt to extend fertilizer subsidy to all crops

Agrarian Services and Wildlife Minister S.M. Chandrasena said yesterday the government will allocate Rs. 50,000 million as fertilizer subsidy beginning May 6, 2011.
The minister said Rs. 34,560 million has been set apart for subsidized paddy fertilizer. He said the introduction of the fertilizer subsidy would boost agriculture production in the country.
Minister Chandrasena was speaking at a press conference at the Information Department yesterday.
He said the government has decided to extend the fertilizer subsidy scheme to all other crops too.
This subsidy will be introduced to coconut, tea, rubber, vegetable, fruits, and horticulture too.
A 50 kg fertilizer bag containing Urea, Phosphate and Muriate of Phosphate is available at Rs. 350 while a 50 kg bag of chemical fertilizer is available at Rs. 1,200.
Farmers can buy a 50 kg bag of mixed fertilizer at Rs. 1,300 under the government's new fertilizer subsidy policy.
The government has provided fertilizer subsidy to farmers for the past six years.
