Colombo ground water is polluted

Colombo ground water polluted

Ground water extracted from tube wells in the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC)area is polluted and not fit for drinking or cooking purposes, CMC Chief Medical Officer Dr Pradeep Kariyawasam told the Daily News yesterday.
He said all hotel, restaurant, motel, lodging house and food service establishment operators are advised not to use the water supplied from tube wells for water requirements. He said CMC Health Officers are testing water samples and checking water bills in these food outlets to ascertain whether the water has been obtained from the main line or from tube wells. "Last year, 50 were caught for obtaining water from tube wells for cooking purposes", he said.
Dr Kariyawasam said out of the 550 food service centres operating within the CMC, only 85 have been granted licences this year. Others have failed to keep up with conditions laid down by the CMC. "The water supply from the main line is one condition among many others including food hygiene and workers' hygiene," he said.
Dr Kariyawasam said various chemicals and shit have been mixed up with ground water resources in the CMC gradually. He requested the public to complain to hot line 2676161, if known of any food service centre or lodging house that does not use water from the main line.
