Unauthorized waste!

Nearly 300,000 unauthorized street lamps


Approximately 300,000 street lamps are installed across the country without the knowledge of the Ceylon Electricity Board, a Power and Energy Ministry Spokesman said. The spokesman said that according to a census, there are around 700,000 street lamps in the country and nearly 400,000 of them are registered.
He added that around 340,000 streets are in the CEB system while 60,000 are in the LECO system.
The spokesman told the Daily News that the energy consumption in the CEB street lighting system is estimated to be about 150 Gwh per year and out of it, 52 Gwh was unaccounted which added an extra 0.57 percent to the CEB system losses.
