Dengue in Colombo (2 news items)

Rising dengue cases worry CMC

By Dilanthi Jayamanne

The increasing number of dengue patients in the Colombo City has caused great concern to the Colombo Municipal Council Public Health Department. PHD chief Dr. Pradeep Kariyawasam said on Thursday (16) that the number of dengue patients had increased to 13,023 by the end of the third week of June.

The PHD receives over twenty dengue patients each day, he said. The Council was doing its best to bring the situation under control but the citizens should do their share to control the rising numbers by cleaning their own premises at least, he said.

Unauthorised constructions in flats have aggravated the issue. There are unauthorised constructions from the ground floor to the top in the flats situated on Forbes Road. The constructions leave very little space between adjacent buildings. Not only is it unhealthy, owing to poor ventilation and light, but it also leaves room for the spread of disease, he said.

The people on the ground floor have fenced off the land and constructed garages over drains which leave no room to clean the drains and ensure that the water flows through them. The fenced lands have coconut shells and various other containers strewn around. The people on the ground floor claim that the garbage is thrown by the people on the top floor. He said the council workers were unable to access these places owing to the illegally fenced in areas.
A majority of dengue cases are from housing scheme and from the areas surrounding canals. The Council has been doing its best carrying out cleaning and mosquito control programmes within the last few weeks. But it needs the support of the people as well, Dr. Kariyawasam added.
