E Coli out break

MRI ready to face E-coli outbreak

 


The Medical Research Institute assured the public that it was prepared to face an E-coli outbreak if it occurred. Quoting the MRI, the spokesman for the Health Ministry said on Thursday (16) that Sri Lanka does not import vegetables.


Samples of imported were being tested. The spokesman said that the public had expressed concern following the recent E coli O104:H4 bacterial outbreak in Germany which caused dysentery and several other complications.

He said the bacteria entered the human body through raw vegetables, fruits and salads. However, Sri Lanka does not import vegetables. Further, the vegetables are cooked before consumption. Sample testing is carried out on fruits being imported at the port.

He assured that the possibilities of E coli 0104:H4 entering the country was very remote, but the MRI was equipped to face any outbreak. (DJ)
