The Public Health Department of the Colombo Municipal Council said that 26 cases had been filed, at the Maligakanda Magistrate’s Court, against food retailers from Pettah, Maradana, Narahenpita and Thimbirigasyaya. The chief of the CMC’s PHD, Dr. Pradeep Kariyawasam, said that warrants had been issued against three of the owners.
He said on Friday (24) that the charges against the eateries were for food contamination, adulteration and unhygienic preparation. The PHD had found E. coli in coconut roti, coconut sambol, egg buns, omelette and samples of fish curry taken during raids.
Dr. Kariyawasam said there had been illegal colouring found in chili and turmeric powder. There were some coloured prawn samples among them as well. Adulterated coconut oil and gingerly oil were also found. A customer had found a gecko in kottu roti purchased in Panchikawatta. The bacteria Staphylococcus aureuss usually found on human skin was found in a sample of samosa, he said.
Dr. Kariyawasam said maggots had been found in a lunch parcel taken from an eatery in Maradana and dry fish samples taken from Manning Market.
Each person had been fined Rs. 2,000 while the total fines amounted to Rs. 54,000, he added.
