150 mw to national grid by year end : Upper Kotmale 91 pc complete

Sandasen Marasinghe

Work on the Upper Kotmale hydro power project has been completed 91 percent since its commencement in 2006 to meet the increasing demand for electricity, Power and Energy Ministry sources said yesterday.

Project director of the Upper Kotmale Hydro Power Project, Shavindranath Fernando said that the filling of the water to the reservoir is scheduled to start in the third week of December and the testing of the generators will be done during the same week and before 2012. The sources said that the project would contribute 150 MW to the national grid by the end of this year. It is being completed under five sub projects to the government’s target of providing 100 percent electricity to the country by the end of 2012.

The dry test of the sluice gates, construction of the head bund, assembly of parts of the turbine and the fixing of transmission lines are in progress.

Sources said that the Waterways Conservation Programme initiated in 2007, parallel to the Upper Kotmale Hydro power project was a success. He added that the Waterways Conservation Programme was initiated to retain the rain water in the reservoir for a longer period, minimize the sediment flow in the rivers and increase the lifetime of the reservoir needed for a proper water management. The catchment area of the Upper Kotmale reservoir extends to an area of 310 square kilometres. Bamboo and eucalyptus plants were planted in those areas.

The setting up of hydro mechanical equipment completed is 99 percent and setting up of power generators completed is 86 percent while the construction of power supply terminals completed is 84 percent. The project is being implemented at Rs 8,548 million (37,817 million yen) with funds provided jointly by the Japan International Corporation Bank and the Ceylon Electricity Board.

The main dam has been constructed near Talawakele Town across Kotmale Oya.
