Unregistered sex stimulants available in pharmacies

By Dilanthi Jayamanne

The Cosmetic Devices and Drug Regulatory Authority (CDDA) yesterday warned the public against using unregistered sexual stimulation drugs available in pharmacies.

Quoting the CDDA the spokesman for the Health Ministry said yesterday that there were over 50 such drugs available in the market.

The spokesman said the CDDA had registered only six drugs to be used for sexual stimulation. They include Viagra, Cupid 40, Tri-bull and Homotex. However, the Authority was unable to take legal action against retailing unregistered drugs as there were no complaints made by those who used them. Pharmacy owners had formed their own code for users and the drug types were only sold to regular users known by them as ‘members.’

A majority of those sexual stimulants contained a harmful chemical known as ‘Sildenafil citrate,’ which increased the blood pressure and thereby the heart beat of the user. It increased the vulnerability to heart failure and brain damage, he said.

The side effects of using Sildenafil citrate he said were abdominal pain, weight loss, digestive problems, nervousness and restlessness, insomnia, loss of appetite, nausea and vomiting, dizziness, headache, severe fatigue, depression, skin rash and itching and toxic psychosis psychotic episodes. The chemical also cause addiction.

The spokesman warned that such unregistered drugs should be taken under a doctor’s recommendation according to the person’s age and stamina. Pharmacies had been instructed to ask for a doctor’s prescription from customers. However, there were those who use more than the prescribed dosage which was harmful and could cause death, he added.
