Rhino-size sex problem at the Dehiwala zoo

By Ifham Nizam

Zoo keepers of the National Zoological Gardens in Dehiwela are doing their utmost to create more breeding space for rhinos, one of the most difficult animals to breed in captivity.

Zoo Director General Bashwara Senanka Gunaratna has instructed officials to construct a tunnel-like area and expand the enclosure where the zoo’s pair of rhinoceros is kept.

Zoo officials said that it was not easy breeding one of the rare species without the right environmental conditions.

However, the impossible was now being reached with new facilities being created for the animals. One barrier for breeding rhinos at the zoo was the constant fights the animals got involved in.

When a male and a female were put together, the animals attacked each other, officials said.

The construction of the habitat would be completed within three months, according to the Director General.
