No rain where it’s needed most

By Ifham Nizam

Despite scattered showers in most parts of the country, there have not been sufficient rains in the catchment, the Systems Control Department of the Ceylon Electricity Board says.

A CEB spokesman said that there was a slight improvement in the water storage levels in the catchment due to showers experienced in most part of the country.According to the Department, the overall hydro storage capacity is about 28 per cent.

However, CEB Chairman Professor Wimaladharma Abeywickrema told The Island yesterday that though hydro capacity was improving they were using only 20 per cent hydro for power generation.

Meanwhile, the Meteorological Department says there will be showers or thundershowers in most parts of the country during the afternoons or in the evenings.

A spokesperson of the Met Department yesterday said that there would be occasional showers in the deep and shallow sea areas off the South- Eastern coast and scattered showers or thunder showers at several places elsewhere in the sea areas around the country.
