Officials of the Special Investigation Unit attached to Southern Regional Office of the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) have collected over Rs 1,106,164 as court fines and compensation from power pirates in August this year.
According to the Chief Flying Squad Officer attached to the CEB’s Southern Provincial Office K G Saranadasa, over 14 detections were made during the operations in August this year.
Twelve incidents of manipulating power meters and two detections of illegal connections had been reported in the Galle and Matara districts within the course of the month.
The power pirates were prosecuted in Galle, Badegama Elpitiya, Balapitiya, Kottawa, Matara and Deiyandara Magistrates Courts.
The Power and Energy Ministry states that vast amounts of revenue are lost to the CEB due to of power piracy. Strict instructions have also been given to the CEB flying squad to come down hard on power pirates.
