It is up to the government to decide whether to increase the electricity tariffs to recover the CEB’s losses or use Treasury funds to continue with the present rates, according to Public Utility Commission of Sri Lanka (PUCSL) sources.
However, they said it was highly unlikely that there would be a power hike in the course of this year.
The Island learns that PUCSL Chairman Dr. Jayatissa De Costa held discussions yesterday with the Board of Directors of PUCSL, following a request made by Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka to increase electricity tariff to prevent the CEB from going bankrupt.
The PUCSL is expected to make known its decision today.
Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka says that the PUCSL has the powers to increase the electricity tariffs and the CEB has therefore requested it to help the CEB minimize its losses due to high thermal power generation.
According to Ranawaka, the CEB incurred a daily loss of Rs. 167 million in August.
