Rs. 11.2 bn to renovate North, East roads

The Ministry of Highways has undertaken to implement a road rehabilitation project at a cost of Rs 11,217 million, to develop more war ravaged roads of the North and the East, a ministry source said.

This includes the renovation of several connecting roads of the A15 highway from Serunuwara to Kantale, which extends up to 41 kilometers. Twelve kilometers of C grade roads in the area are also to be renovated. The whole project, including the whole A15 road stretch, adds up to 152 kilometers.

Under this project a stretch of 99 kilometers of the Batticaloa-Trincomalee road would also be developed using the Double Bituminous Surface Treatment (DBST) technology.

A tourism boom in the area is also expected with the development of the road network of the province. The living standard of the people in the province too is expected to improve with investors setting up new businesses with the developed infrastructure, the source said.

The project is a joint venture between the Sri Lankan and French governments. The French authorities have not disclosed the amount of money they would invest in the project.
