Cabinet has approved a master plan for coconut development aimed at reaching self-sufficiency by year 2016, to be implemented with the participation of the private sector, Coconut Development and Janatha Estate Development Minister Jagath Pushpakumara said.
The Coconut Development Plan from 2011- 2016 coconut sector has been identified as one of the key sectors in developing the country’s economy and there has been a significant increase in coconut production, he says.
Cabinet approval has been granted to recruit 300 coconut development officers to fill the existing vacancies.
Minister Pushpakumara said that further details about the plan would be revealed during the Budget next month.
Ministry had spent Rs. 49.5 million to purchase ten new double cabs for the Chilaw Plantation Company to accelerate the coconut development programme, he said.
