SLPA to woo more investors for Trinco Port
By Pabodha Hettige
The Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) will soon advertise calling for investors to start port related industries at Trincomalee.
"The investment opportunities will be advertised in mid November according to the plans made by the SLPA," Trinco Port Residential Manager J. A. Chandrarathne said.
The closing date for the application would be December 31, 2012. The port authorities had already received a large number of applications for different investments but the processing had been halted till the deadline for applications, he said.
When selecting potential investors, priority would be given to those projects that could generate large incomes to the port and provide greater numbers of employment opportunities to the locals, residing in the vicinity.
According to Chandrarathne, currently, a Holcim Cement plant is under construction there and a Prima products processing plant is already functioning.
The officials would fully depend on the investors for the port development process while roads, electricity and other infrastructural developments would be provided by the government to a certain extent at the preliminary stage.
"Surveying of a land area of 5,000 acres, allocated to be given to the investors and for the purposes of tourism is in progress and would be completed by the end of December this year," Chandrarathne said.
