Oil bill to exceed US$ 3bn

By Wijitha Nakkawita

The oil and gas import bill of the country that stood at 3 billion US Dollars last year is most likely to increase next year as the number of vehicles on our roads keeps increasing at a daily rate of about 600. There are 3.8 million vehicles already registered with the Registrar of Motor Vehicles, according to statistics.
The cost of oil imports to the country last year was $ 2.936 billion while all indications are that the current year’s oil import bill will be bigger during the current year and the next even at current crude oil prices remaining constant.
While half the number of registered vehicles are three wheelers and motor cycles, other vehicles like tractors used in agriculture are also among the number registered.
Of the 20 million population, approximately one among five people own a motor vehicle, a motor cycle or a three wheeler and the number of road accidents are also on the increase with 4 people getting killed every day in road accidents while another 10 are injured.
