Peasants and kidney patients from the North Central Province yesterday (17) staged a protest in front of the United Nations office in Colombo demanding compensation from the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for the damage inflicted on them and their livelihoods as well as their land and environment by compelling them to use lethal inputs in their agriculture.
Swarna Hansa Foundation Programme Executive, Gallege Punyawardana said that around 50 kidney patients and many peasants from the North Central Province participated in the protest.
Meanwhile, Health Researches said that over 8,000 patients had been diagnosed with kidney diseases in the Province, but the real number of patients could be over 100,000.
