Humankind uses about 150 Peta Watt hours (PWh) of energy per year, approximately two fifths more than it did 20 years ago. Of this, renewable energy sources (including hydro electricity, solar, wind and geothermal) account for about 13 percent.
Nuclear power delivers 6 percent and the remainder is supplied by fossil fuels. In other words, seven eighths of world energy consumption is furnished by non-renewable sources, four fifths by greenhouse-gas-emitting coal, petroleum and natural gas.
The USA and China each consumes about one fifth of this energy, the European Union one seventh. Energy consumption growth has been greatest in the Middle East, China and India, which have accounted for over half the world's energy growth in the past two decades.
