Minister Douglas Devananda
The islet which was once considered arid and with limited infrastructure facilities would soon be a centre of attraction for all those who wished for sun, sea and surf, added the minister, states a Traditional Industries and Small Development Ministry release.
It adds: The minister expressing his views at this first meeting of the Delft Pradeshiya Sabha said the government’s plan had been to make Delft, the islet with the most enchanting beach frontage in the country, a tourist paradise.
As such, work on projects for providing drinking water, rehabilitation of roads, housing and sanitary facilities had already begun, the minister added.
He also said that projects to deepen and renovate tanks, lakes and ponds for collection of rain water which had begun a few months ago were nearing completion. Though Delft is provided with a regular supply of drinking water, the water problem will be permanently solved once the Iranamadu water scheme is completed.
Subsequent to the meeting, the minister went on an observation tour of the ‘Vetrukal’ tank, extending over an area of about 15 acres.
The tank, which has been neglected for a long period, has now been deepened and renovated by the Army Engineering Division.
The minister after having observed the tank renovation work gave instructions for its speedy completion.
The minister also having observed the Velanai ‘Sami’ beach, instructed Velanai Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Mr Paul to construct separate toilets for local and foreign tourists daily visiting this attractive beach in large numbers, as he found the present sanitary facilities to be inadequate.
Jaffna District EPDP Member of Parliament Silvestri Alentin, Velanai Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Sivarasah Paul, Jaffna Mayor Yogeswari Patkunarajah and Delft Pradeshiya Sabha Chairman Daniel Rextan also accompanied the minister on his visit.
