Low cost solar power kits to 50,000 families in Ratnapura

By Ifham Nizam

Plans are afoot to provide low cost solar power kits and other renewable energy resources to nearly 50,000 families, who are unable to obtain electricity through the main grid, in the Ratnapura District .

During a recent inspection tour Power and Energy Minister Patali Champika Ranawaka visited several regional electrification projects and small scale hydro power projects.

He also inaugurated several electrification projects, a tree planting campaign, and inspected provincial electricity offices and electricity centres and checked the implementation of efficiency strategies.

Accordingly the Kalawana, Thannapita Henyaya electrification project Udadelwala Meehana Gulana electrification project and the Kolonna Muladiyawala village electrification project were commissioned.

The Kalawana Koddippilikanda electrification scheme was also commissioned.

A tree planting campaign is currently being carried out by the CEB on the instructions of Ranawaka, with the aim of improving the water resources in the catchment areas.

Ranawaka strongly believes that to overcome the power crisis alternative energy sources have to be looked at.

He says the main reason for this is that fossil fuels such as coal are depleting fast. "We hope to obtain 20 per cent of the power to the National Grid by the year 2010 from alternative sources. We have made several concessions to low income families enabling them to obtain electricity. All these measures are implemented with the aim of providing electricity to all by the year 2012," he added.
