Minister rejects demand: 'No cement price hike'
Internal Trade Minister Johnston Fernando while rejecting the demand for a price increase of a 50 kg bag of cement by Rs.35 as requested by three cement companies recently, has instructed the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) to raid traders who sell cement beyond the controlled price of Rs 750 and bring them to book.The decision was taken by the minister after a lengthy discussion with the relevant officials and authorities at the ministry auditorium yesterday.
CAA sources also said that it had no plans to increase cement prices despite illegal price hikes and as instructed by the minister, the CAA will expedite islandwide raids to crack down on cement hoarders and those selling cement beyond the stipulated price.
Legal action will be taken to curb illegal price hikes, but, the regulated price would not be raised. Cement price has been capped at Rs. 750 - the regulated price for a 50 kg bag - although the industry has called for a revision of price to Rs. 785.
The minister pointed out that the present cement shortage was an artificial one and alleged that certain organized groups are attempting to sabotage the country's progress by resorting to such actions.
Tokyo Cement, Lafarge and Ultratec recently made a request to the CAA that the price of cement be increased, citing an increase in production costs.

Cement collected for sample tests
Co-operatives and Internal Trade Minister Jhonston Fernando yesterday directed Consumer Affairs Authority's (CAA) chairman Rumi Marzook to collect samples of all brands of cement available in the local market and send them to internal independent laboratories to ascertain whether their standards are upto the mark.
CAA officers will collect samples of all brands of cement imported or locally manufactured available in the market across the country.
These samples will be sent to overseas labs to check their quality to verify if all brands of cement in the local market are of international standard.

ඒ අනුව ශ්‍රී ලංකා ප්‍රමිති ආයතනයේද සහයෝගය ලබාගෙන සිමෙන්ති නියෑඳි පරීක්‍ෂාවට යෑවීමට නියමිතයි. ශ්‍රී ලංකා වෙළෙඳපළේ ඇති සිමෙන්තිවල තත්ත්වය පරීක්‍ෂා කිරීම මෙහි අරමුණ බව අමාත්‍යවරයා පැවැසීය.
සිමෙන්ති පරීක්‍ෂාව සිදුකරනු ලබන්නේ සිංගප්පූරුවේ හෝ එංගලන්තයේ පරීක්‍ෂණාගාරවලදීය. මෙම පරීක්‍ෂණය ස්‌වාධීනව සිදුකරන ලෙසද අමාත්‍යවරයා පාරිභෝගික සේවා අධිකාරියේ සභාපතිවරයාට දැනුම් දී තිබේ.
මේ අතර රුපියල් 35 කින් සිමෙන්ති මිල ඉහළ දැමීම සඳහා සිමෙන්ති සමාගම් විසින් පාරිභෝගික අධිකාරියෙන් කරන ලද ඉල්ලීම ප්‍රතික්‍ෂේප කර ඇත.
රටේ සිදුවන සංවර්ධන කටයුතු අඩාල කිරීම සඳහා ඇතැම් පෞද්ගලික සමාගම් ගනු ලබන උත්සාහයට කිසිසේත්ම යටනොවන බව සඳහන් කරන පාරිභෝගික අධිකාරිය සිමෙන්ති මිල ඉහළ දැමීමේ කිසිදු අවශ්‍යතාවක්‌ මේ මොහොතේ නොමැති බවද සඳහන් කර සිටී.
