Sand fly inflicts skin disease in NCP

The people in North Central Province have been afflicted with a skin dicease due to being stung by the sandfly.

The decrease was fast spreading in the province, the Skin Specialist at the Polonnaruwa Hospital Dr Indira Kahawita said.

The symptoms of the decease were red patches, swellings etc on the skin once bitten by the fly and it did not cause any pain, she said.

The specialist said in the initial stages they looked like pimples. They appear on the limbs, face, nose and the ears.

The fly the size of a mosquito becomes active at night. Hence the medical experts warn the people to use mosquito nets as a precautionary measure and to avoid sleeping outdoors.

A skin disease is fast spreading among people in the North Central Province. Around 1,170 patients have been reported from Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa districts.

The disease is caused due to sand fly bites, according to Dr Asoka Munasinghe of the Provincial Epidemiological Unit.

Addressing an awareness programme for medical personnel held at the Anuradhapura Heritage Hotel, Dr Munasinghe said the uncovered parts of the human body is worst affected by this skin disease. "Following sand fly bites, the wound expands like scars on the body. Most affected patients are from Padaviya, Talawa, Nuwaragam Palatha East and Rajangane," she said. Patients suffering from this disease should visit government skin clinics without delay for medication, she said.
