NHDA to submit report on unauthorized structures in housing schemes

By Lal Gunasekera

The National Housing Development Authority (NHDA) has been directed by Minister of Housing, Construction, Engineering Services and Common Amenities Wimal Weerawansa to prepare a report on unauthorised constructions in National Housing Schemes to be submitted to the Cabinet.

Minister Weerawansa wants the NHDA to identify structures that should be demolished.

Minister Weerawansa said most of the unauthorised structures had been put up after 1994 and that he had already taken action to remove them.

A 60-unit housing scheme in Colombo would be constructed by the State Engineering Corporation. It was expected to cost Rs. 175 million but the SEC had undertaken to build it for Rs. 159 million and the balance Rs. 16 million would utilised to construct another housing scheme for low income families at Wanathamulla, Borella, Minister Weerawansa said.
