Solving the dog problem, the humane way

Ruwini JAYAWARDANA
Dogs being taken off the streets and abandoned or allegedly killed has become a problem in the country today, said Animal Welfare Trust president Iranganie de Silva.

"Free roaming dogs are removed from the streets and their fate is unknown since the authorities are reluctant to reveal their whereabouts to the public," she said.

"Those responsible for taking decisions fail to give a hearing to animal welfare activists so that a humane re-location programme can be formulated jointly," de Silva said. Speaking at a gathering to brief the media about the collapse of the humane dog-population control programme, Blue Cross India chairman and Co-founder of Animal Welfare India Dr Chinny Krishna said that the animal birth control programme is the answer to the problem.

A public petition with one million signatures will be drawn up for submission to the President to impose a ban on the annual ritual of animal sacrifice at the Munneswaram kovil. This event will coincide with the Animal Welfare Trust's freeing animals destined for slaughter, at the Viharamahadevi Park on August 23 at 2 pm.
