Japanese government has granted US$ 68,072 for two livelihood development projects in the Moneragala and Hambantota districts.

An agreement between Japanese Ambassador Kunio Takahashi and the representatives of Dimuthu Community Development Society (DCDS) in Moneragala and Wanasarana Thurulatha Swechcha Society was signed yesterday (17), at the Japanese Embassy in Colombo.

President of (DCDS), Ven. Nagolle Nandarathana Thera said that tube wells would be constructed at Buttala in the Moneragala District.

Rs. 2.5 million had been allocated for that project through Dimuthu Community Development Society, the Thera said.

"This project will directly and indirectly improve living standards of 425 families," he added.

Chairman of Wanasarana Thurulatha Swechcha Society, Keerthiratne Wickramaratne Yapa said their project in the tsunami and poverty affected areas in Hamabantota District, would help develop five pre-schools in Ambalanthota and Tangalle Divisional Secretariat areas.

"Five million rupees has been allocated for the project aimed at improving the educational and socio-economic development of 160 families," he said.

Takahashi said that as a strong development partner, Japan had been working together with Sri Lanka to facilitate socioeconomic development, ranging from infrastructural development at the national level to rural development at the grass-roots level.
